Breast Augmentation

Countless polls and surveys have been taken throughout the years asking women what they see as the “ideal” breast size, and while the answers vary wildly, the overall consensus is that the majority of women (or at least more than half of the women surveyed) are unhappy with their breasts. Whether their displeasure is due to size, volume, shape or asymmetry, each factor plays a role in why so many women are self-conscious when it comes to their breasts.

Combined with the daily inundation online of photos of women with “perfect” breasts, it’s no wonder that breast augmentation is one of the top choices when it comes to plastic surgery procedures performed in the U.S.

In fact, breast augmentation is consistently number one on the list of the most requested cosmetic procedures, with over 300,000 women choosing to improve the symmetry, contour and overall appearance of their breasts in 2018 alone.

At Manhattan Plastic Surgery NYC and the Florida Institute of Plastic Surgery, we understand that dissatisfaction with your breasts can adversely affect your confidence and how you feel about your body overall. That’s why Dr. Huettner offers breast augmentation – to help boost your confidence and your feelings of femininity, and enhancing your quality of life..

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation also known technically as augmentation mammoplasty, is a procedure designed to improve the shape and size of a woman’s breasts.

Breast augmentation can help:

  • Enhance your body contour by increasing breast size

  • Improve symmetry by equalizing a difference in cup size

  • Restore breast volume lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding

  • Reconstruct breasts following a lumpectomy, mastectomy or injury

Dr. Huettner has extensive training and experience in all types of breast surgery, including augmentation, so you can rest assured that you are in skilled hands when you select Dr. Huettner as your breast augmentation surgeon.

Augmentation with implants

Once you decide to undergo breast augmentation using implants, you will have several choices to make before you undergo surgery. Although breast augmentation has been a popular and often-performed procedure for many years, there are ongoing advancements in surgical techniques and the implants themselves. Some of the choices you will make when choosing breast implants include:

  • Size:

Size is an important consideration, as implants serve to enhance your body contour by making your breasts look more balanced and proportional – not only in regard to each other, but to the rest of your body as well. Dr. Huettner offers a special virtual reality software to give you a sneak peek during your consultation how you may look after surgery!

  • Shape:

Implant shape will depend on what enhancements your breasts require. Round implants are traditionally chosen to provide volume in the upper pole of your breasts and enhance cleavage. However, for certain circumstances teardrop shaped implants can be offered as well. Implants are now made in an “anatomical” teardrop shape as well, to look more like your natural breasts.

  • Placement:

Implants can be placed one of two ways: sub-muscular (under the pectoral muscle) or sub-glandular (under the skin). Placement of your implants will depend on several factors, including the amount of existing breast tissue you have.

  • Profile:

Besides varying sizes, implants can now be chosen with varying “profiles” – which means you can decide how far the implant projects out from your chest wall, usually low, medium or high profile.

  • Material:

Saline or silicone? Each material has its advantages, so your selection will depend on your body, your needs, and your desired outcome.

What to expect

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient surgery usually while you are under general anesthesia. Dr. Huettner will begin the surgery by making an incision, and while additional access patterns are possible she typically chooses the inframammary location (in the fold where your breast meets your chest).

She will then divide the tissues underneath your pectoral muscle or under your skin (depending on where you want the implant placed) creating a pocket, then inserting the implant into the pocket using a minimal touch technique.

Once the implants are situated correctly, she will complete the procedure by carefully closing the incisions with small sutures to reduce scarring.

Breast augmentation surgery usually takes a couple of hours, and after you’ve spent some time in recovery, you can be driven home, where you will need someone to stay with you and help you for at least the first 24 hours.

Recovery & results

After your surgery, Dr. Huettner has her patients wear a special compression bra at almost times for up to six weeks. This bra provides you with extra support and helps to alleviate swelling. As the swelling gradually subsides, you will be able to see your results within a few weeks.

Plan for at least one to two weeks of recovery, which includes lots of rest and keeping all activity to a minimum. You will likely be able to return to work and other normal activities after a week or two, but this will depend on how physically demanding your job is. More strenuous physical activities, including exercise and heavy lifting, should be avoided for at least four to six weeks.

You will see Dr. Huettner for follow-up appointments, and she will provide you with post-operative care instructions, so be sure to follow them to the letter to help ensure the best possible results. Results of breast augmentation are considered long lasting, though it is essential to keep in mind that your breasts will continue to age naturally.

Over time you may eventually notice some minor changes which usually are only slight and shouldn’t have much of an effect on your appearance, but these changes are slight and shouldn’t have much of an effect on your appearance.
